Bali-based French artist Jean-Philippe Haure prays each day for a grateful life.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in Orl\u00e9ans 40 years ago to an artisan father and a grad\u00aduate of the pres\u00adti\u00adgious art school L\u2019Ecole Boulle in Paris, Haure could have pur\u00adsued a flour\u00adishing career in France, a heaven for artists.
Instead, he fol\u00adlowed his \u201cHis calling\u201d: Attracted to the spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adality of the Benedictine con\u00adgre\u00adga\u00adtion, he joined the monastery of Saint Beno\u00eet sur Loire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1991, he landed in the small town of Gianyar in Bali as a vol\u00adun\u00adteer to teach art at Sasana Hasta Karya voca\u00adtional school, devel\u00adoped by the Catholic Church of Bali, thou\u00adsands of kilo\u00adme\u00adters from his home\u00adtown. \u201cAs human beings, we don\u2019t have any freedom to choose or to design our lives,\u201d Haure says. \u201cOur task is just to struggle to fully accept the kind of life which has been given to us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he first arrived in Bali, he was, he admits hon\u00adestly, quite con\u00adfused. \u201cI just fol\u00adlowed it and enjoyed every minute of the day.\u201d
Living in a modest house equipped with a barn-cum-studio in the green and shady artist vil\u00adlage of Kububingin near Ubud, he is almost iso\u00adlated from the hustle and bustle of the island\u2019s glit\u00adtering art circle and glam\u00adorous tourism industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI lead a very ordi\u00adnary life: taking chil\u00addren to school, teaching and nur\u00adturing my artistic works,\u201d he says. \u201cNothing is so spe\u00adcial. Yet it can be spe\u00adcial depending on how people see and feel it.\u201d
After teaching at the school, he spends hours working in his studio built on the slope of a small river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His labo\u00adrious efforts have yielded dozens of dis\u00adtin\u00adguished art\u00adworks, some of which are now on dis\u00adplay at D Gallery in Jakarta until March 18.
\u201cMy art\u00adworks reflect my own life,\u201d Haure says. \u201cIt goes between abstract and realism, spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adality and mate\u00adri\u00adalism. I really don\u2019t know how to clearly define it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many critics, Haure\u2019s art pieces are dif\u00adferent from the works of other Western artists who explored Bali as their sub\u00adject. Take for example his por\u00adtrayal of Balinese women, as com\u00admented upon by the respected art critic Jean Couteau, who wrote an insightful review of his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adizes Jean-Philippe Haure\u2019s atti\u00adtude in his treat\u00adment, in his works, of the social issue of Balinese wom\u00adan\u00adhood, is his total absence of prej\u00adu\u00addices \u2013 colo\u00adnial as well as post-colo\u00adnial,\u201d Couteau wrote. \u201cHe seems to tell us that Balinese women may be beau\u00adtiful, but this should not entitle Westerners to \u2018see\u2019 and treat them as sexual objects in the name of an \u2018exotic\u2019 dif\u00adfer\u00adence enshrined in colo\u00adnial his\u00adtory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Couteau also found Haure\u2019s atti\u00adtude to art to be far from any nor\u00adma\u00adtive cul\u00adtural stereo\u00adtyping; it is, he wrote, \u201can atti\u00adtude much healthier than his [Western artists] pre\u00adde\u00adces\u00adsors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haure could easily fall into the trap of deliv\u00adering a stereo\u00adtyp\u00adical por\u00adtrayal of the island as depicted by many Western artists in the past. He refuses to allow that, even as a band of for\u00adeign artists seek fame and for\u00adtune by exploiting \u201cBa\u00adli\u00adnese exoti\u00adcism\u201d, although, Haure says, \u201cThere were often mis\u00adper\u00adcep\u00adtions and misun\u00adder\u00adstand\u00adings about the term exoti\u00adcism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When people visit a far\u00adaway place occu\u00adpied by \u201cstrange\u201d people with an alien cul\u00adture and tra\u00addi\u00adtions, they tend to see it as exotic, he says, which is a kind of shal\u00adlow\u00adness in the under\u00adstanding and appre\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion of other people\u2019s cul\u00adture and tra\u00addi\u00adtions: \u201cIn my opinion, they [groups of first-time Western artists in Bali] try to strongly express the island\u2019s exoti\u00adcism in terms of its unique\u00adness and dif\u00adfer\u00adences without trying to really under\u00adstand them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haure believes that once people under\u00adstand and accept the dif\u00adfer\u00adences and diver\u00adsi\u00adties, there will be no more \u201cex\u00adoti\u00adcism\u201d in any social and cul\u00adtural con\u00adtex\u00adtual forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But under\u00adstanding a dif\u00adferent cul\u00adture requires time and effort, Haure says.
\u201cWhen I first arrived in Bali, I found it very dif\u00adfi\u00adcult to adjust to a new living envi\u00adron\u00adment. I remem\u00adbered how I should learn to taste local food, to feel the hot and humid weather, to under\u00adstand the way the local people thought and behaved and even the way they walk and sit. Everything seemed so hard to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiritually, it was even more com\u00adplex. \u201cThe way I looked at the con\u00adcept of my self\u00adness was dif\u00adferent from the people around me,\u201d he adds. As devout Catholic and a European, Haure found it par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlarly hard to adapt to life on the pre\u00addom\u00adi\u00adnantly Hindu island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt required hard work and it took me quite some time to try to build a strong bridge to secure a way of phys\u00adical and spir\u00adi\u00adtual com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his first years in Bali, he stayed with the Balinese noble family of Puri Abianbase in Gianyar, where he learned tra\u00addi\u00adtional Balinese music, Ble Ganjur, and the arts. More impor\u00adtantly, he built direct inter\u00adac\u00adtion with the locals by social\u00adizing intensely with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that way, Haure expe\u00adri\u00adenced a gradual and nat\u00adural cross-cul\u00adtural trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion as he began to learn, embrace and respect the values of his adopted land\u2019s cul\u00adture, tra\u00addi\u00adtion and beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Balinese society has taught me some\u00adthing very valu\u00adable \u2013 the com\u00admu\u00adnality, a sense of togeth\u00ader\u00adness.\u201d In such a society, he points out, no per\u00adsonal ego is allowed to stand out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs a child and a man edu\u00adcated in the rational and indi\u00advidual Western cul\u00adture, the com\u00admunal con\u00adcept was hardly rec\u00adog\u00adnized….\u201d
His newly acquired knowl\u00adedge and respect of the local people and cul\u00adture had the effect of melting away com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion bar\u00adriers. He began to see the Balinese and Indonesians as his fellow humans whose values and thoughts must be under\u00adstood and respected rather than as \u201calien people and attrac\u00adtive art objects\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of these beliefs and expe\u00adri\u00adences are clearly man\u00adi\u00adfested in his work and his simple and reli\u00adgious life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He now shares his values with his family and his stu\u00addents, who come from dif\u00adferent parts of Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI feel so moti\u00advated to intro\u00adduce my chil\u00addren and stu\u00addents to the virtues of learning and respecting the diver\u00adsity and dif\u00adfer\u00adences that often sep\u00ada\u00adrate people from one and another,\u201d he says. \u201cIt is the real and dif\u00adfi\u00adcult lesson that everyone should master in order to suc\u00adceed in life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
